Hi I'm Stu,
For years, hiking felt like a distant dream, overshadowed by my struggles with weight and health. Weighing over 33 stone (210 kilograms), everyday life was an uphill battle. Simple tasks became daunting challenges. Going out to restaurants often led to anxiety, as I struggled to find clothes that fit or felt comfortable. I frequently found myself opting for the back corner of a dining room, avoiding the stares and whispers of others. Shopping for clothes was non existent; I didn't visit physical stores, feeling defeated by the limited options available to me. Even visits to friends' houses became complicated, with fears of fitting into their spaces or participating in activities that would highlight my limitations.
In 2019, I reached a turning point. I knew I needed help and decided to take action. After persistently seeking support from my GP, I was connected with the NHS bariatric team. Over the next four years, I underwent monthly psychological assessments, and finally, I was approved for surgery in December 2022.
In May 2023, I had bariatric surgery, and my life transformed. This incredible experience reignited my passion for the outdoors. With newfound energy and a thirst for adventure, I began exploring trails I once admired from afar. Just four weeks post-surgery, I was eager to hike again, and my determination grew stronger with each step.
Every hike became a celebration of my progress, allowing me to connect with nature and my inner resilience. The thrill of discovering new paths and breathing in fresh mountain air became essential to my daily routine.
Hiking is no longer just an activity; it’s a testament to my journey and a vital part of my new lifestyle. Each step I take is a victory worth savoring.
I’ve lost nearly 15 stone (95 kilograms), and at 6 feet 2 inches tall, I feel rejuvenated. I’ve left behind my old habits of drinking and comfort eating, choosing instead to embrace the mountains and savor this second chance at life of walking and exploring.
It all began with that first step. Throughout 2023, my walking and exploring adventures have taken me across the United Kingdom, offering incredible experiences that I’m eager to share with you.
As part of my second chance and rebirth, I now regularly speak to other bariatric patients going through their own journey and offer my support, I attend group sessions to and offer people the chance to understand what it means to go through bariatric surgery. I also give blood every 12 weeks, to give something back and now I aim to give even more to those less fortunate than me by performing charity challenges.
